So much of early childhood work asks us to do more: redirect, intervene, fix, and teach. But what children need most is our presence.

One idea that de-centers teachers without taking away our attuned presence is the idea of "being with" children.

Too often, teachers are rushing through the day and controlling how learning happens, which can impact our relationships with students and our ability to be an effective and empathetic teacher.

Being with children is not passive. It’s intentional, relational, and deeply active work. It’s staying close without taking over. Holding space without rushing growth. Choosing connection over control.

Try taking five minutes to just be with children—not directing, not controlling, but experiencing what they experience and sharing in the joy of discovery. Could this support your work and your own well-being and sustainable practice?
